2020: A round up

So.. wow! We’ve come to the end of a bizarre and tumultuous year and for the first time in a few years I have the time to sit down and write a blog post reflecting upon the past 12 months.

First of all I just want to say a huge love and thank you to all my fab couples who have been so kind, understanding and flexible in this madness. The majority of my weddings for 2020 ended up being rescheduled due to coronavirus, and for nearly all of those we were able to find a date that worked for us both.

Although it has certainly been a difficult year for me and my business, I cannot begin to imagine what it must be like to have to reschedule your wedding day, and my heart goes out to every couple who has gone through this, or had to dramatically change their plans to fit in with the guidelines.

I figured that since my business has been a lot quieter than usual this year, I’ll share photos from both my work life and personal life on this post. First up is of course.. weddings!

Five fabulous weddings

At the beginning of my year, my calendar was packed with my usual number of around 30 weddings, and this ended up being 5 in the end! I shot 2 in February before the national lockdown happened, and then 3 afterward when we were allowed weddings with a 30 person limit.

Yogi & Simon - 8th February 2020

Yogi & Simon - 8th February 2020

I was so thrilled when Yogi & Simon’s wedding enquiry landed in my inbox as Yogi was one of the models I worked with when I was a fashion photographer 8 years ago! We kept in touch via Facebook as we are both obsessed with cats, and it has been lovely watching their relationship grow over the years. Their beautiful winter wedding at Eastington Park in Gloucestershire was the perfect celebration and ended with some of the best dance moves and tunes I’ve witnessed at a wedding!

Lizzy & Simon - 22nd February 2020

Lizzy & Simon - 22nd February 2020

Lizzy & Simon married under festoon lights in a heartfelt ceremony in front of their family, friends and church community on a chilly February day. The cheers and whoops as they walked back down the aisle perfectly illustrated how thrilled everybody was for Lizzy & Simon, and how much love and support they have behind them! I love that we had the opportunity sneak off to a local country park to take their portraits among the blossoms, before heading to a village hall for plenty of cake and a quiz that everyone got involved in. A perfect day.

Abby & CHris - 21st August 2020

Abby & CHris - 21st August 2020

Abby & Chris’s day took me back to one of my favourite venues, South Farm in Royston, for their mini wedding in August. They had always planned to marry on this date, and I loved their relaxed attitude of “let’s just go for it!”, and their wedding was a welcome joy amongst this crazy year with tears of joy, fabulous food and great speeches. They scaled down their guest list to just 30 people, and said their vows in front of closest family and friends in the Tudor Barn, before sneaking off for photos in the beautiful grounds of their venue. It meant the world to be asked to capture such an intimate celebration.

Eilis & Tom - 22nd August 2020

Eilis & Tom - 22nd August 2020

Eilis & Tom were originally planning to marry in April, and although they moved the “big day” to next year, they wanted to get married anyway and I was so thrilled to be asked to capture their ceremony in August. They had a beautiful church ceremony with sunshine pouring through the windows, and lots of giggles as their nephew chattered in the vows from the pulpit! Afterward we headed back to Eilis’ parents house for a little moment of quiet as we took their portraits as a newly married couple in the garden. See you in 2021 you two!

Katie & Ben - 18th September 2020

Katie & Ben - 18th September 2020

In September I headed down to Hampshire for Katie & Ben’s wedding day. I was particularly excited for their day as I had photographed her brother Joseph’s wedding in 2017, so it was lovely to see their family again and to meet Joseph & Abby’s little girl too! Their colourful church ceremony featured lots of beautiful, heartfelt readings, and we were blessed with blazing sunshine all day. As dancing wasn’t allowed due to coronavirus restrictions, they changed their evening to be a games night instead and it was an absolute hit with their guests. Lots of fun!

..And here’s a little bit of everything else!

As this year has been quiet on the weddings front, I thought I’d share some moments from my personal life this year, both before and after coronavirus!

A trip to Morocco

A trip to Morocco

The year started with a week in Morocco, staying in a beautiful riad with my dad and stepmum. Lots of walking, striking colours and fragrant, incredible food. And of course, shoe shopping as I can’t resist anything with tassels on. It is hard to believe that I was actually on holiday earlier this year with everything that has gone on since!

BIG personal milestones

BIG personal milestones

February marked 10 years since my mum died, and in March my divorce finalised and I was able to buy the other half of my flat. It meant a lot as a small business owner to be able to afford to take on my mortgage alone, and I am so excited to start more work on my home soon. And finally, in October I turned 30.

Astrophotography

Astrophotography

Astrophotography is something that I have wanted to dabble in for a long, long time but never found the chance until this year. I have been fascinated by the stars and space since I was a child and this year gave me the opportunity to explore that interest in more depth.

We were so lucky to have the incredible Comet NEOWISE pay us a visit in July and after a few fruitless evenings, I finally got a chance to see it with my own eyes and I will never forget that moment. And in the Autumn I was thrilled to have the above three photos accepted for an exhibition at the Quarry Theatre in Bedford, featuring work created under lockdown.

A new opportunity

A new opportunity

This year I have been working 4 days a week for Little Mouse, a company founded by Gill & Elliott whose wedding I photographed in 2016. I have been doing a bit of everything - packaging up orders, taking photos, putting new products online, and I have loved being a part of their team and made to feel so welcome. Thank you guys.

A trip to the seaside

A trip to the seaside

When restrictions were eased over the end of Summer, I went to stay at a friend’s holiday home in Norfolk. It was a wonderful trip with my household bubble (as I live alone, I am in a bubble with my photographer pals Dan & Sarah), and I’m not sure there are many things more joyful than seeing dogs run around in the sand having the time of their lives! And to top it all off, we got a beautiful view of the Milky Way on our last night there.

cross stitch crazy

cross stitch crazy

Over this year I have rediscovered my love for cross stitch and finished my first big project, this gorgeous sampler featuring lots of little plants. I’m also half way through my next project, a big planet Earth amongst the stars.

So I think that covers a bit of everything, really.. it’s been a crazy year and one that’s difficult to sum up, but we got through it!

If you got this far, thank you, and here’s to a much more peaceful 2021.

Katharine & Ross: Joyful Winter Wedding at St Michael's Manor Hotel, St Albans

February brought along the wedding of Katharine & Ross, who chose to marry in the beautiful setting of St Michael's Manor Hotel, in St Albans. It's an immaculately furnished venue and I was thrilled to find that their ceremony and dinner was to take place in a conservatory with huge windows - truly a photographers dream!

Katharine chose to get ready at home in London, so I met them both at the venue, and one of my favourite shots of the whole year has to be the black and white photograph of Katharine getting out of the wedding car. Her face absolutely beamed despite the rain and she looked incredible in a classic satin dress and carrying a bouquet of delicate white anemones - one of my favourite flowers.

As they said their vows there was so much joy and laughter, and it was a dream to shoot with the light pouring in through the windows. What I loved about this venue was that even though it rained all day, you can't tell as the venue is filled with light with big windows everywhere!

We took a few minutes out to shoot in the foyer and on the staircase, giving Katharine & Ross some time to just have a chat and enjoy each others company in a quiet moment amongst the madness of their wedding day. Congratulations you two and thank you so much for the privilege of capturing your day.

Christina & Chris: Musical Winter Wedding at Bath Abbey & Bath Guildhall

The one thing I’ll always remember about Christina & Chris’s wedding way was the music. With Chris as a professional trumpet player, it was only natural that their day was going to be filled with the most fantastic and consciously chosen music at every step along the way – and that’s exactly what it was.

The city of Bath was the backdrop for their day, firstly with their wedding ceremony at the stunning setting of Bath Abbey, followed by celebrations at Bath Guildhall.

I just gasped when I walked into the Abbey – it felt like a royal wedding with those tall ceilings, beautiful stained glass windows and the music that Chris had composed filling the room. The choir and band featured Chris’s friends and industry peers and it really felt like everybody joined forces to make their day as special and as personal as possible.

Christina looked beautiful as she walked down the aisle with her dad, carrying a bouquet of roses and eucalyptus, dotted with paper flowers made from sheet music. I’m pretty sure they spotted me tearing up at one point in the ceremony, half-hidden behind the giant Christmas tree as I shot their vows!

The beautiful carved wooden gates of the Abbey made for a beautiful backdrop as they left their ceremony to confetti, at one point with a guest chucking a whole box of it over Christina which of course made for a fantastic photo! Afterwards, we took a short walk to the Guildhall for their reception in the stunning ballroom, with tables themed on their love of gin and music.

During their speeches, they were treated to video messages of congratulations from their favourite rugby team as a wonderful surprise! The excellent music continued throughout their day, including during reception drinks and most importantly an incredible band in the evening, with vibrant colours lighting up the ballroom as they danced the night away.

Thank you both so much for having us along to capture your wonderful day!

Cat was the most stunning photographer we could have asked for on our wedding day. She captured every little look, every cute kid moment, every guest and every smile - especially the moments that passed us by in a whirlwind of a day. We ended up with the most stunning collection of images that we keep looking back on.

We had SO many compliments as well about Cat, her manner, her skill and her kindness. She managed to get the balance perfect between achieving the formal shots but not making them feel staged or forced, as well as all the beautiful, informal reportage shots.

I couldn’t have dreamt that someone would capture our day so perfectly and would recommend Cat to anyone in a heartbeat.

Rebecca & Mark: Winter Wedding at Rothley Court Hotel, Leicester

One of my favourite things about New Year’s Eve weddings is the fact that the couple will be celebrating in style every single year – what a fab thought. And of course no forgotten anniversaries for these guys!

I love when my job finds me amongst familiar faces and Rebecca & Mark’s day brought me exactly that as I’d photographer her sister Lucy’s wedding at Chicheley just two months earlier in October! It was wonderful to spend time with their lovely family again, and especially their gorgeous little girl Amelia. Sadly Lucy & Alex were unable to make the day but they were there for every moment with their dad on Skype duty! I loved that they had dressed up in their wedding outfits too for the Skype call - it was such a thoughtful touch.

Becky and her girls got ready in their sweet cottage, and headed to their heartfelt ceremony at the village church on horse and carriage! Becky wore a bespoke dress and headpiece by Lucie Green and carried a wintery bouquet of white roses and pine cones.

They left their ceremony to a sprinkling of confetti and afterward took a romantic horse and carriage ride back to the Rothley Court Hotel for drinks, food and dancing. Congratulations guys and thank you so much for having me along for the ride!

Big love to Lucy & Alex for asking one of my closest colleages Dan at Two-D Photography along to film the day - it’s always great fun working with him and his video captured the spirit of the day perfectly.

Chloe & Jamie: Chic Industrial Wedding at The West Mill, Darley Abbey, Derbyshire

Chloe & Jamie’s wedding day was industrial yet romantic in style, and over and above everything else.. just effortlessly cool! The setting for their day was the fab West Mill in Derbyshire, which Chloe and Jamie found once settling on an industrial style for their big day. We just loved how each floor caters to a different aspect of their day: the ceremony, wedding breakfast, drinks reception and evening party!

Chloe wowed us all as she walked down the aisle in a stunning Suzanne Neville dress, full length veil and carrying a huge bouquet of soft pinks and greens, a look she later added an edge to with a leather jacket.

Their emotion-filled ceremony was beautiful and incorporated a religious blessing from Chloe’s granddad who is a vicar, bringing a real closeness and sense of family to their day. They said their vows in front of a bespoke calligraphy backdrop, featuring lyrics from Into My Arms from Nick Cave, with joyful readings by friends and family and lots of happy tears.

For their wedding breakfast, they opted for long tables decorated with garlands of greenery, succulents, candles and handwritten place names. The pretty romantic flowers contrasted beautifully with the industrial nature of the venue and really brought the style of their wedding together.

The party had a real nightclub/bar evening feel to it, and kept the momentum of their day going, and we left them to dance away to a fab DJ.

Huge love and thanks to Kate Sharp Photography for having me along to second shoot!
